Why? Verbal Reasoning Part 3 helps children move from describing what they see to explaining why it's happening. Each card shows an everyday scene and asks a question, such as "Why is the boy carrying an umbrella?" Children look at the clues, work out the reason and put it into words. The answer, "To keep himself dry", is on the back.

Why "Why?" is harder
"What" questions ask children to name what they see. "Why" questions ask them to work out something they can't see, the reason behind it. Compare:
- What is the boy carrying? → "An umbrella."
- Why is the boy carrying an umbrella? → "To keep himself dry."
That step, from seeing to explaining, underpins understanding stories, joining in conversations and answering questions at school.
How the audio works
- Go to chatterbugs.app and enter the code from your box.
- Choose a language.
- Scan the QR code on the front of a card to hear the question and the answer.
In the app you can slow the audio down, replay the question or the answer, and record your own voice as the model. Audio plays online, so you'll need an internet connection.
How to use the cards
- Start with "what". "What is the boy carrying?"
- Then ask "why". Give your child time to think.
- Point to the clues. "Look at the sky. What's falling?"
- Turn it over. Compare their answer with the one on the back. Other sensible answers count too.
- Use "because". Help your child say a full answer: "Because it's raining."
