30 picture mysteries that teach children to reason and explain how they know
Super Solver 1: How Do You Know? turns verbal reasoning into a detective game. Each card shows a mystery, three suspects and one clue. Who popped the balloons at the party: the cat, the rhino or the bear? Children work through three steps, state the problem, collect the evidence and draw a conclusion, then explain their answer. The rule is simple: no guesses, only reasons.
At a glance
- 30 jumbo mystery cards, 14.5 × 10 cm
- Front: a scene with one mystery, three suspects and one clue
- Back: the mystery question and guided prompts for each of the three steps
- Every mystery ends with "How do you know?", so children have to explain their thinking
- Builds inference, explanation and the language of reasoning: because, so, it must be
- Uses the same three steps as reasoning in science: problem, evidence, conclusion
- Sturdy glossy laminated card with rounded corners
- Ages 4+
- Follows the developmental sequence of early language
- Designed by speech and language professionals
Three steps to solve every mystery
- State the problem: "What happened here? What must you find out?"
- Collect evidence: "Who can you see? What clues can you spot?"
- Draw a conclusion: "Who did it? How do you know?"
Children often know the answer but can't say why. The steps give them a structure for putting their reasoning into words, and the same pattern turns up in science, problem-solving and explaining ideas at school.
How to use the cards
- Look at the mystery card together and read the question on the back.
- Spot the clue. Give your child time to search the picture.
- Choose from the three suspects. Talk about each one.
- Explain the reasoning. "I think it was the bear because…"
- Judge the reasons, not just the answer. There's no answer key: a well-explained conclusion that fits the clues is what counts.

- Who We Are
- What Makes Us Unique
Brainy Bug Resources is built by speech and language therapists with extensive clinical experience in mainstream schools, special schools and community clinics. Because language lies at the heart of all learning, our range goes beyond first words, covering vocabulary, grammar, reasoning, emotions, storytelling, phonics and more. Every resource follows the order in which children's language develops.
- Built in developmental order. Each deck has a clear place in a child's language journey, so you always know the next step.
- Audio in up to 9 languages. Hear every word and sentence through the Chatterbugs app, slow it down, or record your own voice as the model.
- Designed to get children talking. Picture-only sides, a monkey character and contrast sets give children a reason to find the words themselves rather than copy them.
- Space for your home language. Writing lines on the back let parents add words in the language they speak at home.
- Made for home, classroom and therapy. The same cards work for a parent at the dinner table and a therapist in a session.
