30 cards for understanding more complex feelings, with guided questions and audio in 6 languages

Emotions Level 2: How Are They Feeling? builds on Level 1 with six more advanced emotions. There are six emotion cards and 24 scenario cards, four for each emotion, such as a girl opening the door to find her grandmother has come to visit. Children look for clues, work out how the person feels, explain why, and think about how they would feel themselves.

Four levels of guided questions

The questions on the back of each scenario card go further than in Level 1, asking children to think about what people know, expect and might do next:

  1. Noticing faces and body cues: "Look at the girl's face. What is it doing?"
  2. Cause of the emotion: "Do you think she knew her grandmother was coming?"
  3. Expressing emotions: "What do you think she said the moment she opened the door?"
  4. Social understanding and empathy: "How do you think the grandmother is feeling?"

Seeing each emotion in four different situations shows children that the same feeling can come from very different events, and that two people in the same situation may feel differently.

How the audio works

  1. Go to chatterbugs.app and enter the code from your box.
  2. Choose a language.
  3. Find the scenario card on the key card and scan its QR code to hear the situation described.

In the app you can slow the audio down, replay it, and record your own voice as the model. Audio plays online, so you'll need an internet connection. The guided questions are for you to ask and aren't part of the audio.

How to use the cards

  1. Look at a scenario card and play the audio. "What's happening?"
  2. Find the clues in faces, bodies and the situation.
  3. Name the feeling. Find the matching emotion card and talk about the similar words on the back.
  4. Ask the questions on the back, starting at the right level.
  5. Make it personal. "Has that ever happened to you? What helped?"

Brainy Bug Resources is built by speech and language therapists with extensive clinical experience in mainstream schools, special schools and community clinics. Because language lies at the heart of all learning, our range goes beyond first words, covering vocabulary, grammar, reasoning, emotions, storytelling, phonics and more. Every resource follows the order in which children's language develops.

  • Built in developmental order. Each deck has a clear place in a child's language journey, so you always know the next step.
  • Audio in up to 9 languages. Hear every word and sentence through the Chatterbugs app, slow it down, or record your own voice as the model.
  • Designed to get children talking. Picture-only sides, a monkey character and contrast sets give children a reason to find the words themselves rather than copy them.
  • Space for your home language. Writing lines on the back let parents add words in the language they speak at home.
  • Made for home, classroom and therapy. The same cards work for a parent at the dinner table and a therapist in a session.
