30 emotion cards with guided questions, for recognising and talking about feelings

Emotions Level 1: How Are They Feeling? teaches children the early core emotions and how to work out what someone is feeling. There are six emotion cards and 24 scenario cards, four for each emotion, showing everyday moments such as a girl hugging a puppy or a mother checking her child's temperature. Children look for clues in the picture, name the feeling, and talk about why the person feels that way.

Four levels of guided questions

The back of each scenario card takes children from spotting a feeling to understanding it:

  1. Noticing faces and body cues: "Can you point to the happy child?"
  2. Cause of the emotion: "Why is she happy?"
  3. Expressing emotions: "Do you feel happy when you play with animals?"
  4. Social understanding and empathy: "Do all people feel happy around animals?"

Start at the level your child is ready for and move on when they're confident. Seeing each emotion in four different situations shows children that a feeling comes from what's happening, not just from a facial expression.

How the audio works

  1. Go to chatterbugs.app and enter the code from your box.
  2. Choose a language.
  3. Find the scenario card on the key card and scan its QR code to hear the situation described.

In the app you can slow the audio down, replay it, and record your own voice as the model. Audio plays online, so you'll need an internet connection. The guided questions are for you to ask and aren't part of the audio.

How to use the cards

  1. Look at a scenario card and play the audio. "What's happening?"
  2. Find the clues. "Look at her face. What is she doing?"
  3. Name the feeling. Help your child find the matching emotion card.
  4. Ask the questions on the back, starting at the right level.
  5. Make it personal. "When did you feel like that?"

Brainy Bug Resources is built by speech and language therapists with extensive clinical experience in mainstream schools, special schools and community clinics. Because language lies at the heart of all learning, our range goes beyond first words, covering vocabulary, grammar, reasoning, emotions, storytelling, phonics and more. Every resource follows the order in which children's language develops.

  • Built in developmental order. Each deck has a clear place in a child's language journey, so you always know the next step.
  • Audio in up to 9 languages. Hear every word and sentence through the Chatterbugs app, slow it down, or record your own voice as the model.
  • Designed to get children talking. Picture-only sides, a monkey character and contrast sets give children a reason to find the words themselves rather than copy them.
  • Space for your home language. Writing lines on the back let parents add words in the language they speak at home.
  • Made for home, classroom and therapy. The same cards work for a parent at the dinner table and a therapist in a session.
