30 "When?" questions about times of day, days and seasons, with audio in 6 languages

When? Time, Day and Season helps children understand and answer questions about when things happen. Each card shows a familiar routine or event and asks a question, such as "When do you brush your teeth?" The answer, "In the morning", is on the back, so children can work it out first and then check. Along the way they learn the small words that time phrases need: in the morning, on your birthday.

Why "When?" questions matter

Time is abstract. Children can't see "morning" the way they can see a ball. They learn it by linking time words to things they do: brushing teeth in the morning, eating lunch in the afternoon, cake on their birthday. Answering "when" questions helps children talk about their day, understand routines and follow the order of events in stories.

How the audio works

  1. Go to chatterbugs.app and enter the code from your box.
  2. Choose a language.
  3. Scan the QR code on the front of a card to hear the question and the answer.

In the app you can slow the audio down, replay the question or the answer, and record your own voice as the model. Audio plays online, so you'll need an internet connection.

How to use the cards

  1. Ask the question. "When do you brush your teeth?"
  2. Let them think. Point to clues in the picture, such as the sun coming up.
  3. Turn it over. Check the answer together: "In the morning."
  4. Make it personal. "What else do you do in the morning?"
  5. Sort by time. Group cards into morning, afternoon and night, or by season.

Brainy Bug Resources is built by speech and language therapists with extensive clinical experience in mainstream schools, special schools and community clinics. Because language lies at the heart of all learning, our range goes beyond first words, covering vocabulary, grammar, reasoning, emotions, storytelling, phonics and more. Every resource follows the order in which children's language develops.

  • Built in developmental order. Each deck has a clear place in a child's language journey, so you always know the next step.
  • Audio in up to 9 languages. Hear every word and sentence through the Chatterbugs app, slow it down, or record your own voice as the model.
  • Designed to get children talking. Picture-only sides, a monkey character and contrast sets give children a reason to find the words themselves rather than copy them.
  • Space for your home language. Writing lines on the back let parents add words in the language they speak at home.
  • Made for home, classroom and therapy. The same cards work for a parent at the dinner table and a therapist in a session.
